It uses enterprising approaches to empower staff and pupils by raising awareness of the role of the individual in society and the actions he/she can take to help combat world poverty. The Ethco materials support an interdisciplinary approach to learning and are carefully matched to Curriculum for Excellence outcomes. The activities are designed to build knowledge, skills and attitudes for active, campaigning citizens and to increase awareness of ethical issues in business. This event is designed to support those schools who are already participating as they take Ethco forward, and also to encourage others to become involved by highlighting the benefits for all. The event is funded by DFiD and so is free for a limited number of delegates to attend. In cases where there is difficulty in funding travel, a contribution may be made to reasonable travel expenses. We have renamed the award in remembrance of Angela. Why is it called the Butterfly Award? It was once suggested that a butterfly flapping its wings could possibly cause a tornado, due to small atmospheric changes that the flapping creates. This ‘butterfly effect’ was researched by Edward Lorenz, who suggested that one very small change could have a huge impact in another way because of the ripple effect that the action had created.   We would like to challenge you to see how far your ‘ripple’ can go! Can you ‘flap your wings’ and take one small action that will impact positively on the planet or lives of other people. Angela died, at the age of 59, following a late diagnosis of lung cancer. Until a few days before her death she continued to work on three projects: as part of a Scottish Government- funded research team on Recognising the Achievement of young people; as the leader and driving force of the new UNESCO UNITWIN project linking Scotland with Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania; and as the Project Manager of the DFID- funded EthCo project, now being developed across Scotland. Angela’s experience of teaching convinced her of the energy and enthusiasm that could be released in children and young people when they were allowed to be enterprising and creative and encouraged to take responsibility and make decisions. She co-authored three of the Good Practice books in the Enterprising Ideas series used extensively across the whole of Scotland and beyond: Primary Schools; Early Years; and, most recently, Working with Vulnerable Children and Young People. Angela was able to link her international work back into Enterprise Education in Scotland through the EthCo project, to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals. This project brings together the different drivers of Angela’s working life: making a difference for the better, particularly for the poorest and most disadvantaged, and releasing the energies in children and young people to help them take charge of their lives. It was once suggested that a butterfly flapping its wings could possibly cause a tornado, due to small atmospheric changes that the flapping creates. This ‘butterfly effect’ was researched by Edward Lorenz, who suggested that one very small change could have a huge impact in another way because of the ripple effect that the action had created.
