I've been working hard with the other bioengineers brainstorming ideas for activities covering current and future technologies in the fields of tissue engineering and artificial organs. We are currently finishing off the worksheets so that they will be ready for when we come to visit all of the schools in the near future! Hopefully you will find the activities interesting and most importantly fun!!

On Friday the 16th March I visited pupils at Gracemount High School.  We carried out activities to find out more about tissue engineering and scaffolds.  Everyone had fun examining polymorph first, then everyone created models of fingers including bone, tissue, blood vessels, skin and nail.  There were some really excellent fingers made.  I was also really impressed that some students have been carrying out research into superheroes - keep up the good work!

We ran out of time at the end so we didn't get to talk about how we might use tissue engineering to create your super powers.  If anyone has any questions about their own superheroes use the questions section of the website and we'll try to help you out.  I look forward to seeing the drawings of all of your superheroes!

On Friday the 23rd March I visited pupils at Loudoun Academy.  We carried out activities to find out more about tissue engineering and scaffolds.  First of all we examined polymorph then went on to create models of fingers including bone, tissue, blood vessels, skin and nail.    Everyone worked really well and I was impressed by all of your fingers.  I was really also impressed by everyone’s answer to my questions!  You all seemed really knowledgeable.  Did anyone find out the names of all the animals that can re-grow limbs?  I also checked out Animal Farm after some of you mentioned it.  Did anyone see the episode where they used scaffolds to grow cartilage into a nose shape?  They explained that it is important to have a blood supply in tissue engineering which we spoke about when I visited.

I hope you are coming up with lots of ideas for your own superheroes!  If you need any help working out the engineering and scientific principles behind their super powers post up your queries on the website in the...
